War service: Egypt, Western Front Admitted to No 1 Auxiliary hospital, Helipolis, 24 December 1915 (bronchitis); discharged to duty, 29 December 1915. Taken on strength, 22nd Bn, Tel el Kebir, 8 January 1916. Found guilty, 20 March 1916, of being absent without leave: awarded 10 days' confined to barracks, and forfeited 1 day's pay under royal Warrant. Found guilty, 25 March 1916, of (1) inattention in the ranks whilst on parade; (2) disobedience of orders on parade: awarded 28 days' Field Punishment No 2. Taken on strength, 58th Bn, Ferry Post, 4 April 1916. Transferred to 60th Bn, and taken on strength, Ferry Post, 4 April 1916. Admitted to 8th Field Ambulance, South Head, 13 May 1916, and transferred same day to 14th Field Ambulance (Board case); to 8th Field Ambulance, 15 May 1916 (deformed toe), and transferred same day to No 2 Australian Casualty Clearing Station ('no disease'); discharged to unit, 17 May 1916.
