'On the afternoon of 23/9/17 three bearers of this ambulance were wounded while carrying through GLENCORSE WOOD which was then under heavy bombardment. Hearing of this No 2784 Private BLISS with his squad of bearers at great personal risk brought back his wounded comrades from the area under heavy fire to the relay post at TANK HOLE. To his immediate bravery these wounded men undoubtedly owe their lives, as was shown by the fact that a few moments after these men were removed a heavy shell fell on the spot where they had been lying.'
