Meritorious Service Medal '4th/5th October, 1917-Operations East of YPRES. Prior to this operation Private RICHARDSON laid the lines to 42nd Battalion and Brigade Headquarters under heavy shell fire. When the Commanding Officer took up his position, he found communication established though the lines had been constantly cut by intense enemy shell fire. Private RICHARDSON went alone time after time and kept the lines intact. During the operation he was stationed at the Battalion forward Station and was instrumental in establishing communication to Companies and maintaining it under very heavy hostile shelling. He then accompanied his Officer in reconnaissance to all Companies and to the Forward Signal Station of the Brigade on the left. The success of the Battalion Signal communication was largely owing to his courage and devotion to duty.'
