War service: Egypt, Western Front Allotted to and proceeded to join 59th Bn, Tel el Kebir, 26 February 1916. Transferred to 60th Bn, 15 March 1916, and taken on strength. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 18 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 29 June 1916. Reported Missing, 19 July 1916. Now, 25 August 1916, reported 'Killed in Action, 19 July 1916'. Statement, Red Cross File No 2290603, 4632 Pte J.H. WHITE, 60th Bn (patient, 1st Southern General Hospital, Birmingham, England), 21 August 1916: 'On Wednesday, July 19, 1916, about 7 p.m. in the fourth wave of the push near V.C. Avenue I saw Lance-Corporal Richardson, who was in the same Lewis Gun Section as myself, hit in the lower part of the abdomen. We were attacking the enemy's trenches at the time and I saw him fall. Immediately afterwards I was hit, as I crawled back again to our lines I saw that Richardson had turned over and was lying on his face, apparently dead.'
