Statement, Red Cross File No 2290603, 4632 Pte J.H. WHITE, 60th Bn (patient, 1st Southern General Hospital, Birmingham, England), 21 August 1916: 'On Wednesday, July 19, 1916, about 7 p.m. in the fourth wave of the push near V.C. Avenue I saw Lance-Corporal Richardson, who was in the same Lewis Gun Section as myself, hit in the lower part of the abdomen. We were attacking the enemy's trenches at the time and I saw him fall. Immediately afterwards I was hit, as I crawled back again to our lines I saw that Richardson had turned over and was lying on his face, apparently dead.'
