'During the attack on MT. ST. QUENTIN, ner PERONNE, on 31st August, 1918, this stretcher bearer displayed great gallantry in aiding and collecting the wounded. Throughout the day he worked continuously moving over the open ground, regardless of the intense enemy machine gun and artillery fire and successfully carried in numerous wounded men in full view of the enemy. His prompt and untiring efforts, which under the very trying and adverse circumstances, called for a very high standard of courage and coolness, undoubtedly saved many lives.'
