Military Medal 'This N.C.O. was in charge of a bombing party on the night 11th/12th February, 1917, during an attack on CLUDY TRENCH north east of GUEUDECOURT and displayed conspicuous gallantry throughout. During the second counter attack made by the enemy in force, he retired his men to the cover of the second barricade and he himself with Lance Corporal BROWSE, in the face of great personal danger, covered their retirement and remained at his post at the advanced barricade. So effective was the barrage of grenades hurled by these two N.C.O.s that after a time the enemy retired in confusion and the advanced barricade remained in our hands. Corporal RITTER and Lance Corporal BROWSE, unaided, held off the enemy counter attack and finally drove off the enemy and saved the position entirely.'
