'This Pte was the only survivor of a party of 11 men who were engaged in laying out direction tapes on 18.9.18 S.E. of Le Vergiour N.W. of St. Quentin, the remainder of the party having become casualties. He was of great assistance in giving first aid to the wounded and afterwards accompanied his Officer and succeeded in carrying out the work to the Objectives. Throughout the day this man showed an utter disregard of danger and was invaluable in assisting in other work always under fire.'
