Embarked Alexandria to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, Gallipoli, 20 May 1915. Appointed Lance Corporal, 23 October 1915. Disembarked Alexandria, 27 December 1915 (general Gallipoli evacuation). Court of Enquiry, Race Course Camp, Heliopolis, 18 January 1916, held to investigate the circumstances under which Lance Corporal ROBERTSON discharged his rifle on 28 December 1915 thereby wounding 1268 Trooper H.C. RIGBY, who subsequently died of wounds, 30 December 1915. [The file is incomplete, containing no conclusion of the Court. In the absence of any mention of any verdict attributing blame, it can perhaps be concluded that the Court held that the shooting was accidental and that ROBERTSON was not to blame.] Promoted Corporal, Abu Hammed, 26 September 1916. Admitted to 4th Light Horse Field Ambulance, Shunnar, 6 August 1917 (conjunctivitis); discharged to duty and rejoined unit, 14 August 1917. Appointed Temporary Sergeant, 9 September 1917; reverted to rank of Corporal, 19 September 1917. Appointed Temporary Sergeant, Beersheba, 30 October 1917; promoted Sergeant, 4 November 1917. Transferred to Cadre Staff, 4th Light Horse Training Regiment, 16 January 1918; taken on strength, Moascar, 17 January 1918.Tried by Field General Court Martial, Moascar, 19 March 1918, on charge of when on Active Service absenting himself without leave from his unit at Moascar from 0600, 8 March, until he reported back at 2130, 9 March 1918. Pleaded Guilty. Found guilty: sentenced to be reduced to the rank of Corporal and to forfeit all ordinary pay for 7 days. Promoted Sergeant, 18 April 1918. Wounded, 6 June 1918 (bruied head, left groin, caused by stone dislodged), and admitted to 4th Light Horse Field Ambulance; transferred to 47th Stationary Hospital,10 June 1918; to 44th Stationary Hospital, 12 June 1918; to 31st General Hospital, Abbassia, 14 June 1918; to Convalescent Depot, Boulac, 22 June 1918; discharged to 4th Light Horse Training Regiment, 4 July 1918; rejoined 4th Light Horse Regiment, 25 July 1918. Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Port Darwin', 15 November 1918; disembarked Melbourne, 24 December 1918; discharged, Melbourne, 22 February 1919.
