'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Together with a comrade he entered a burning ammunition dump and extricated the sergeant in charge of his party, who had been badly wounded, from under the burning boxes of ammunition. They carried him to a place of safety, in spite of the fact that the dump was under hostile shell fire and that gas shells were exploding.'
