Proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 17 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 23 June 1916.

Admitted to 15th Field Ambulance, 28 August 1916 (nail in foot); rejoined Bn, 15 September 1916. Admitted to 15th Field Ambulance, 26 September 1916 (septic wound, left foot); rejoined Bn, 10 October 1916.

Evacuated to 8th Field Ambulance, 15 October 1916; transferred to 14th Field Ambulance, 16 January 1917 (mumps); to No. 1 Convalescent Depot, Boulogne, 3 February 1917; rejoined unit, 22 February 1917. Admitted to 15th Field Ambulance, 23 February 1917 (skin infection); rejoined unit, 20 June 1917. On leave to England, 29 July 1917; rejoined unit, 16 August 1917.

Wounded in action, 30 September 1917; admitted to 3rd Canadian Casualty Clearing Station (not yet diagnosed); transferred to 14th General Hospital, Wimereux, and re-diagnosed as neurasthenia. Rejoined unit, 11 December 1917.

Found guilty by Field General Court Martial, 21 August 1918, of desertion in that he was absent from the forward area from 7 to 8 August 1918: awarded 2 years' imprisonment with hard labour; commuted to 12 months, 26 August 1918; sentence suspended, 16 September 1918.

Marched out for England, 5 March 1919; commenced return to Australia on board 'Devanha', 8 May 1919; disembarked Adelaide, 20 June 1919; discharged, 12 August 1919.
