War service: Western Front Embarked Sydney, 31 October 1917. Stautory Declaration, 14 December 1917, stated he had enlisted on 21 December 1915 under the name of Ernest James ALLEN [sic] 'which name I now declare to be incorrect.' Admitted to ship's hospital, at sea, 6 December 1917 )mumps); discharged to duty, 17 December 1917. Disembarked Devonport, England, 26 December 1917, and marched into 12th Training Bn, Codford. Proceeded overseas to France, 1 April 1918; taken on strength, 15th Bn, in the field, 17 April 1918. Wounded in action, 25 August 1918 (gassed), and admitted to 4th Australian Field Ambulance; transferred same day to 55th Casualty Clearing Station; to Ambulance Train No 34, 26 August 1918, and admitted same day to 6th General Hospital, Rouen. Transferred to England, 27 August 1918, and admitted to 1st Southern General Hospital, Birmingham, 28 August 1918. Discharged on furlough, 12 October 1918, to report to No 4 Command Depot, Hurdcott, 26 October 1918. Found guilty, 28 October 1918, of being absent without leave in London from 10.30 am to 1 pm, 26 October 1918: awarded forfeiture of 1 day's pay. Marched out to Overseas Training Brigade, 19 November 1918; marched into No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 3 January 1919. Commenced return to Australia from Liverpool on board HT 'Argyllshire', 2 August 1919 (disciplinary: to be placed in detention on arrival); disembarked Melbourne, 22 October 1919, for onward travel by rail to Brisbane; discharged (services no longer required: fraudulent enlistment), Brisbane, 24 October 1919. No War Gratuity payable. Board ruled, 11 April 1922, automatically forfieted entitlement to war medals. Wife wrote to Base Records, 20 April 1919, asking to know 'where he is, and if he is alive or not'. Wife wrote to Base Records, 28 September 1919, asking for information as to her husband's whereabouts, not having heard from him for 12 months when his pay allotment to her was cancelled, and having, together with her 5-year-old son, to live with her mother 'who is not well off'. Wife wrote to Base Records, 6 November 1940, asking if it was possible 'to have his death presumed', having been deserted by him 'about 1921', and stating that 'I have not the means for a divorce'. Base Records replied, 14 November 1940, that it had no information regarding him since his discharge in Brisbane in 1919. |
