'On the morning of 9/5/1917 about one mile east of Noreuil this stretcher bearer was returning with his squad to the R.A.P. after carrying a wounded man to the relay post in the sunken road at C.11.a.6.6. when the enemy opened up with a heavy curtain of fire. One of the squad, who was some distance in the rear, was severely wounded. Private Rose returned through the heavy shelling, and showing utter disregard for personal safety bound up the man's wounds and then, carried him to the nearest shelter under the railway embankment, about 200 yards distant. Later he took them to the relay post. This bearer has shown constant devotion to duty and has set a splendid example to his fellow bearers during the whole of the operations from 3/5/17 to 9/5/17 in carrying and rescuing wounded many times under heavy shell fire.'
