'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during a hostile attack, when a very heavy and accurate fire was concentrated on his battalion, which suffered severe casualties. By his cheerful courage, energy, and example he rendered invaluable service in maintaining the fire of his guns during the action. Subsequently he superintended the removal of the wounded under a heavy barrage and his work throughout was a splendid example to all ranks.'
