'For conspicuous gallantry and disregard of heavy hostile shell fire on the 15th October, 1917. When the trenches occupied by his Platoon on the BROODSEINDE RIDGE were completely blown in, he moved about personally digging men out and bandaging wounded men, thus setting such an example of coolness and devotion to duty that his men were able to set about constructing new trenches and shelters. His general conduct when in the line and under heavy shell fire was excellent.'
