Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry under heavy shell fire. At 10 a.m. on the morning of the 8th Otober, 1917, at 1st ANZAC Corps Troops Supply ColumnUs Issue Dump, while units were drawing rations. The enemy shelled area around the dump, causing casualties amongst units drawing rations. Sergeant ROSS immediately took charge of all transport, which was considerable, consisting of M.T. and H.T. He rallied all ranks and directed transport to safety. Two horses killed blocked the roadway. These he removed, after cutting them free from harness, and dragged aside, allowing transport to pass. All motor transport got away clear without damage. He attended to the removal of the killed and wounded, an during a lull in the enemy fire directed the issue of supplies, which was sucessfully carried out without further loss, although enemy shells were falling at intervals. By his bravery and devotion to duty, considerable transport was savd from enemy fire, and casualties amongst personnel light, and all units received rations for the day.
