War service: Egypt, Western Front Taken on strength of 55th Bn, Ferry Post, 20 April 1916. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 19 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 29 June 1916. Posted missing, 20 July 1916. Court of Enquiry, held in the field, 26 July 1917, pronounced fate as 'Killed in Action, 20 July 1916'. Statement, Red Cross File No 2361003, 1242 Pte P.G. IRELAND, 20th Bn (patient, No 4 Australian General Hospital, Randwick), 5 June 1917: 'The mother of this man tells me that she has heard from a returned soldier named Deary, that Roth is in Gorford Hospital, St. Mary's, London, and is out of his mind.' Second statement, 174 Pte J.W. DEERY, 20th Bn, 1 October 1917: On enquiry for him I was told he was taken prisoner during a raid. This man said he had taken part in the same raid and witnessed him being taken, but was powerless to help him.' Note on file: 'No trace Germany. CERT. by Capt. Mills 10.10.19.' Third statement, 4861 Corporal W.G.F. NIXEY, B Company, 55th Bn (patient, No 4 Australian General Hospital, Randwick), 16 August 1917: 'He was killed by a German Sniper (ic) on the morning of 20/7/16 at Fromelles in the German lines before evacuation. I was alongside him when he fell, he was shot through the forehead and killed outright and neither moved nor suffered. We had to retire soon afterwards and were compelled to leave his body.' Letter, Secretary, St Mary's Hospital, to Australian Red Cross Society, 27 August 1917: '... I am sorry that Pte. Roth has never been an In-Patient of this Hospital ...'
