Distinguished Conduct Medal

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He rushed a machine gun post single handed, and despatched five of the team with the bayonet. When the remaining man endeavoured to train the machine gun on him he slewed it round, though his hand was shattered in doing so, and grappled with the enemy whom he killed. He then dismounted the gun, which he carried with him to the R.A.P. where he was ordered to proceed. His gallant and determined action at a critical moment enabled our advance to proceed with few casualties.'
