His action was witnessed by Lieutenant BIRD and Lieutenant LILBURNE.' Second description [of action after MM awarded] reads: 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty at LEPEUPLIER near CAESTRE on the night of 28th/29th April, 1918. The enemy opened up a heavy shell fire on the 102nd Battery Wagon Lines. This N.C.O. showed great courage and devotion to duty in asisting to rescue two men from under a tree, which had fallen on four men, killing two. The further shelling set fire to a dump of ammunition which spread to the stables. He then transferred his attention to the extinguishing of the fire and afterwards to the release and withdrawal of the horses and other Government property. He showed great determination and courage throughout and was conspicuous amongst a gallant party of 12, organised by Captain DOHERTY.'
