Medals |
Military Medal 'At Mouquet Farm, France, on 22nd August 1916, Pte Russell was a member of a party under Lieut. Ryan and during the relief of the party was subjected to intense Artillery fire. The men had already been suffering from similar fire for the previous 48 hours. One of the party was badly wounded and Pte Russell placed him in a supposed place of safety returning then to report. In the meantime the enemy's fire had become hotter and Russell, believing that the wounded man was in a dangerous situation and though slightly wounded himself begged permission to return and rescue his comrade. This was granted him and he succeeded in bringing his comrade into safety behind our lines.'
