'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during the operation near ZONNEBEKE, 26th September, 1917. Soon after Zero a shell landed amongst the Brigade Forward Party severely wounding the Officer in charge besides disorganising the party. He rallied the remainder and reached the Red Line where he established communication with Advanced Brigade Headquarters and with Units. The line was repeatedly cut. His party was reduced to one third its strength. He worked unceasingly and his gallantry under shell fire in coordinating the work of the linesmen enabled communication to be maintained. The two Battalion Commanders, who were in a position to know, state that Sergeant RYAN earned a D.C.M. if ever a man did.'
