Admitted to No 8 Field Ambulance, 11 May 1916 (paratitis); transferred to No 14 Field Ambulance, Ferry Post, 13 May 1916; to No 8 Field Ambulance (Acting Casualty Clearing Station), Ferry Post, 14 May 1916 (mumps); discharged and rejoined unit, 23 May 1916. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 17 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 23 June 1916. Posted missing, 19 July 1916. Court of Enquiry, held in the field, 1 September 1916, pronounced fate as 'Killed in Action, 19 July 1916'. Note on B.103, 'buried in vicinity of Fleurbaix'. FORD, 58th Bn, 11 December 1916: 'We attacked near Vermeiles (sic) on the 19th July three Brigades of Australians and others, and we failed and we had to come back to our own line. C Company was told off to carry ammunition. Ryan and [4539 A.C.E.] Lepp were on that job; it was very dangerous in no-man's-land there, and they got missing, there was machine gun and shelling both.
