FORD, 58th Bn, 11 December 1916: 'We attacked near Vermeiles (sic) on the 19th July three Brigades of Australians and others, and we failed and we had to come back to our own line. C Company was told off to carry ammunition. Ryan and [4539 A.C.E.] Lepp were on that job; it was very dangerous in no-man's-land there, and they got missing, there was machine gun and shelling both. Most of the wounded were picked up that weren't too far on. Both of them went over with us, and went well on.'
