Military Medal 'During the bombardment of our trenches near CORDONNERIE FARM, on the night of 30th/31st May, 1916, Sergeant Thomas, having been forced to come to the surface of the mine, called for volunteers to go below and rescue men who had been rendered unconscious by gas or fumes, Private Ryan responded. He went below and rescued one man, but was unable to withstand the fumes and had to come up again. He showed great courage and did as much as he was physically able to do under similar circumstances to those under which Sergeant Thomas acted.'
