Distinguished Conduct Medal 'During the attack on Mont St. Quentin on 1 September, 1918, twice with splendid disregard of danger, he went back alone, through intense fire, collecting men who had been cut off and leading them forward. A third time he returned alone, and brought forward numerous Lewis gun panniers salvaged from casualties. His magnificent work was directly responsible for the success of the attack.'
