Statement, Red Cross File No 24100207, 3943 Pte W. STEELE, C Company, 59th Bn, 4 September 1916: '"Paddy the cook" otherwise Pte. E. Shaw 2444 C. (cook) 59th. Batt told me he saw Samuel's dead body during the night of July 19th. at Fleurbaix. Shaw was out all night and saw the body while going over in the charge or coming back afterwards. He told me this when he came back to the battalion, after being in hospital for a few days.'
