'East of YPRES at POLYGON WOOD on the night of 28th/29th September at about 8.0 p.m. Sergeant Ecceston of 'A' Company was seriously wounded during heavy enemy shelling. Private Sayers, a Stretcher-bearer of 'D' Company at once proceeded to the spot and arranged a stretcher party, carrying Sergeant Eccleston to the Aid Post in spite of a heavy enemy barrage. On two subsequent occasions during the same night he carried badly wounded men to the Aid Post under heavy shell fire. He was remarkable at all times for the activity he displayed in attending to wounded and assisting to get stretcher cases away. He showed great courage and coolness throughout and set his comrades a splendid example of determination and devotion to duty.'
