Military Cross 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during an enemy attack. He led his company with dash in a counter attack and held the enemy at a critical moment. He showed great courage under heavy fire while organizing his line, and alone captured a machine gun which was enfilading his company, killing the two men on the gun. He disposed one with his steel helmet and throttled the other.'
