'For conspicuous service during the period 16th/17th September, 1918, to 11th November, 1918, and for the following. On 23rd August, 1918, near PROYART, Lance Corporal SCHMITT showed wonderful coolness and bravery. His gun having silenced one of 2 German machine guns he and his Officer rushed the remaining gun and he shot dead the German Officer who was just about to shoot Lieutenant MARTIN (his own Officer and who received a bar to his M.C. for his gallantry at this time.) Lance Corporal SCHMITT also was instrumental in singlehandedly capturing 6 German machine gunners. This recommendation is forwarded under paragraph 1(c) of Fourth Army HD/877 of 7th December, 1918, as the case was not previously brought to notice.'
