War service: joined 4th Light Horse Regiment at Gallipoli, and posted to Machine Gun Squadron, 2 October 1915.

Disembarked Alexandria, 27 December 1915 (general Gallipoli evacuation).

Taken on strength, 4th Machine Gun Squadron, Ferry Post, 23 February 1917.

Admitted to 4th Light Horse Field Ambulance, Fukhari, 17 July 1917; transferred to 74th Casualty Clearing Station, Rafa, 19 July 1917; to No 2 Stationary Hospital, El Arish, 21 July 1917; to 36th Stationary Hospital, 23 July 1917 (inflamed testicle); discharged to Machine Gun Training Squadron, Moascar, 9 September 1917; transferred to 3rd Brigade Machine Gun Squadron, 3 October 1917; to Rest Camp, 22 March 1918; rejoined unit from Rest Camp, 8 April 1918.

Admitted to 2nd Australian Stationary Hospital, Moascar, 20 July 1918 (bubo, non-venereal); discharged to duty, 2 October 1918.

Found guilty, Moascar, 12 October 1918, of conduct to the prejudice of good order and military discipline, to wit (1) drawing pay from two paybooks (2) failing to comply with a declaration made by him: awarded forfeiture of 14 days' pay.

Commenced return to Australia from Kantara on board HT 'Delta', 2 August 1919; disembarked Adelaide, 31 August 1919; discharged, Adelaide, 31 October 1919.

Miss E.A. Ireland wrote to Base Records, June 1918, seeking confirmation of the fact that Pte Sclanders, to whom she said she was engaged, has been returned to Australia on account of venereal disease, had been quarantined, and had again left for the front, without any notification to his next of kin or his name being published in the local press.

Personal file at NAA contains no information relating to his period of service as 61 S R SCLANDERS, and there is no separate file under his original regimental number of 61.
