Proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 25 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 30 March 1916. Appointed Company Sergeant Major, in the field, 1 April 1916. Wounded in action (gun shot wound, left foot), 26 July 1916; transferred to England, 1 August 1916.

Proceeded overseas to France, 28 March 1917; rejoined Bn, 2 April 1917.

Wounded in action (gun shot wound, right arm, chest), 20 December 1917; transferred to England and admitted to War Hospital, Warren Road, Guildford, 29 December 1917. Transferred to 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 10 January 1918; discharged to No. 3 Command Depot, Hurdcott, 14 January 1918.

Proceeded overseas to France, 17 April 1918; rejoined Bn, 22 April 1918.

Marched out to England to commence return to Australia, 10 August 1918; commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Medic', 24 August 1918; disembarked Melbourne, 11 October 1918; discharged, 10 December 1918.
