'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He was ordered to protect the flank of the battalion, and, with great courage and determination, captured two enemy 'pill-boxes' which were giving trouble. He frequently led patrols to discover the movements of the enemy, and showed fine qualities of leaderhsip and disregard of danger.'
