Enlisted, 11 August 1915. Appointed Acting Corporal, 24 May 1916; reverted to Private, 21 June 1916.

Proceeded from England to France, 9 August 1916; taken on strength, 9th Bn, from Reinforcements ex 1st Australian Division Base Depot, Etaples, France, 22 August 1916.

Admitted sick to hospital, France, 3 February 1917; rejoined unit, 19 February 1917.

Admitted sick with pleurisy, 21 August 1917; transferred to 53rd Casualty Clearing Station, 22 August 1917; admitted to 3rd Australian General Hospital, 23 August 1917; to 3rd Convalescent Depot, 30 August 1917. Found guilty of being present in Treport without authorisation. Discharged to duty, 7 September 1917.

Rejoined unit in Belgium, 20 October 1917.

Appointed Acting Corporal (without pay), 16 November 1917; reverted to Private, 1 February 1918.

On leave in England, 1-22 December 1917; rejoined unit, 22 December 1917.

Charged with being absent from his billet without a pass, failing to carry a box respirator, and giving the wrong name, rank and number to the MP; found guilty and sentenced to 7 days' Field Punishment No. 2, 13 July 1918.

Found guilty of unlawful possession of a government bicycle: sentenced to 14 days' Field Punishment No. 2, 14 July 1918.

Promoted Temporary Corporal, 28 September 1918; Corporal, 17 November 1918; Temporary Sergeant, 18 November 1918.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Osmonde', 16 June 1919; arrived in Australia, 5 August 1919; discharged in Brisbane, Queensland, 19 September 1919.
