Military Medal

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. on the 20th October, 1917, at his battery position near BELLEWARDE (east of YPRES), this fitter rendered most gallant and invaluable service in keeping his guns in action under heavy shell fire. on many occasions he took the place of wounded men in the detachments and so enabled the guns to remain in action when otherwise they would have been rendered silent. He set a splendid example to all ranks - not only on this occasion but throughout his service with the battery ever since its formation.'
