'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. This man as battalion scout moved ahead of the attacking troops looking for machine gun nests and posts. When found he used his light Lewis gun to keep their heads down till they were rushed by the oncoming troops. His energy and skill prevented casualties in the attacking waves'
