Joined 12th Bn, Railhead, Egypt, 1 March 1916.

Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 29 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 5 April 1916.

Found guilty, 31 March 1916, of failing to comply with orders,(1) removing belts (2) sitting down: awarded 14 days' Field Punishnment No 2.

Detached to 3rd Brigade NCOs course, 14 September 1017; rejoined unit, Belgium, 15 October 1917.

Wounded in action, 1 November 1917 (gun shot wound, left arm), and admitted to 11th Canadian Field Ambulance, and transfererd to 3rd Canadian Casualty Clearing Station, and thence to 3rd Stationary Hospital, Rouen, 2 November 1917; to England, 16 November 1917, and admitted to Central Military Hospital, Sutton Veney (wound: severe); discharged on furlough, 27 november 1917, to report to No 1 command Depot, Sutton Veney, 11 December 1917.

Absent without leave, 11-13 December 1917.

Found guilty, 14 December 1917, of being absent without leave from 3.30 pm, 11 December, till 5 pm, 14 December 1917: admonished, and forfeited 3 days' pay under Royal Warrant.

Admitted to 1st Australian Dermatological Hospital, Bulford, 17 December 1917; discharged to Convalescent Training Depot, Parkhouse, 19 April 1918; total period of treatment for veneral disease: 124 days.

Marched in to No 1 Command Depot, Sutton Veney, 1 May 1918.

Found guilty, 22 May 1918, of being absent without leave from midnight, 14 May, till 8 am, 16 May 1918: awarded 4 days' Field Punishment No 2, and forfeited a total of 6 days' pay.

Marched out to Overseas Training Brigade, Longbridge Deverill, 26 June 1918.

Proceeded overseas to France, 15 August 1918; rejoined 12th Bn, in the field, France, 20 August 1918.

Transferred to 1st Division Train, 11 October 1918, and remustered as Driver.

On leave to United Kingdom, 28 December 1918; rejoined unit from leave, 14 February 1919.

Found guilty, Field General Court Martial, 26 February 1919, of while on Active Service being absent without leave from 31 December 1918 till 14 February 1919 (45 days): awarded 60 days' Field Punishment No 2.

Transferred to No 1 Company, Army Service Corps, 27 March 1919.

Admitted to 2nd Field Ambulance, 1 April 1919; discharged to duty, 12 April 1919; total period of treatment for venereal disease: 12 days (hospital stoppages [of pay] not applicable).

Marched out to England, 20 May 1919, for return to Australia.
