'On 4th July, 1918, during the operation against VAIRE WOOD, east of CORBIE, Sergeant SETTLE was acting Company Sergeant Major of his Company. He was of the utmost assistance to his Company Commander during the forming up, and after the attack was launches. When all the Platoon Commanders had become casualties he rallied and controlled the men with great ability. Upon reaching the objective he assisted in settling the men in their new positions and moved about freely although the enemy shell fire was intense. Sergeant SETTLE was shortly after wounded and severely shaken, but persisted in carrying on for another twelve hours until he collapsed through exhaustion, shock and loss of blood.'
