'On BROODSEINDE RIDGE, east of YPRES, as battalion runner on the nights 15th/16th and 15th/17th October, 1917, he displayed magnificent courage and devotion to duty in carrying despatches forward to Companies during heavy and continuous enemy barrage fire. He set a fine example to all by his devotion to duty. During the night 16th/17th October, 1917, when all telephonic communication was cut for five hours, he repeatedly went out into heavy barrage with despatches, thus succeeding in keeping communication forward. He has on every previous occasion displayed the same energetic and self sacrificing spirit.'
