War service: Western Front Embarked Sydney, 2 February 1918; disembarked Southampton, England, 20 April 1918, and marched into Reserve Brigade Australian Artillery, Heytesbury. Admitted to 1st Australian Dermatological Hospital, Bulford, 21 June 1918; discharged, 1 July 1918; total period of treatment for venereal disease: 11 days. Found guilty, Heytesbury, 2 July 1918, of being absent without leave, 12-19 June 1918: awarded 21 days' Field Punishment No 2, and forfeiture of 28 days' pay. Proceeded overseas to France, 15 September 1918. Wounded in action, 29 September 1918 (gun shot wound, jaw), and admitted to 11th Australian Field Ambulance; transferred to 40th Stationary Hospital, Havre, 30 September 1918; to England, 6 October 1918, and admitted to Sutton Veny Military Hospital, 7 October 1918. Discharged on furlough, 4 January 1919, to report to No 1 Command Depot, Sutton Veny, 20 January 1919. Married Annie Dorothy ANNAL, spinster, aged 29, The Independent Chapel, 23 January 1919. Court of Enquiry, 4 May 1919, declared him to be an illegal absentee from 12 April 1919. Discharged from the AIF, 1 April 1920, in consequence of desertion. Medals: forfeited entitlement to war medals. Remained in the United Kingdom for the rest of his life; died Birkenhead, Cheshire. |
