'During our operations in the METEREN Setor on the night of 23rd/24th April, 1918, when our advance was held up by enemy machine gun fire, Private SHEEHAN volunteered to go forward with his platoon officer (Lieutenant F. STAHL, D.C.M.) to silence the enemy's gun. Another concealed gun however opened fire on them and the officer was wounded very severely. Private SHEEHAN was ordered by his officer to crawl back to safety; but he refused and regardless of danger carried Lieutenant STAHL back to our lines under heavy machine gun fire. Through his steadfast courage and devotion to duty he prevented Lieutenant STAHL from falling into the hands of the enemy.'
