Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry on August 6, 1915, at Lone Pine, in tunnelling to open communications with a captured position. Although overcome by explosion gases, Cpl Sheppard, immediately on recovery, successfully completed his work under heavy fire.'
