Military Cross 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in charge of his platoon, when he made a reconnaissance in force and successfully established an outpost, with but slight casualties, owing to his fine leadership. Throughout the night he displayed the greatest courage and determination moving over unknown ground, within very close range of hostile machine gun and rifle fire, and it was mainly due to his splendid example that the position was so long held.'
