'For conspicuous powers of leadership and devotion to duty in action East of YPRES on 4th October 1917. He acted as Company Sergeant Major and was of the greatest assistance in re-organising the Company when the objective was reached. He worked practically without rest for two days, yet was unflagging in his energy and cheerfulness and inspired great confidence in all members of the Company.'
