Military Medal 'For gallantry and great devotion to Duty under fire. In the neighbourhood of PERONNE, principally on the SOMME Canal and River, this Sapper carried despatches continuously under machine gun fire and shell fire, on the days and nights of August 30th, 31st, September 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th., journeying from points 300 to 500 yards in advance of our posts to Brigade Headquarters, with reports on progress of footbridging over the SOMME Valley. His fortitude, perseverance, gallantry, and devotion to duty have been most marked.'
