'At the commencement of the advance from JEANCOURT on 18th September, 1918, his section commander having been wounded, Private SIMPSON took charge. His section shortly after was reduced to himself and one other, and with great determination he got forward his gun and the whole of his panniers. This extra ammunition was of the greatest value when his platoon became held up from concentrated fire from three enemy machine guns, which were holding up the left of the advance. Although slightly wounded in the face by a piece of shell he brought his gun into action and materially assisted in killing and capturing enemy gun crews. His prompt obedience to orders and cheerful acceptance of dangers were a splendid example to his platoon.'
