'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in leading his company with ammunition for the front line, through heavy barrage and across the open several times during the day, doing much useful work without heavy casualties. During subsequent operations he reconnoitered and arranged for his company to construct strong posts during consolidation of captured positions. He displayed the greatest fearlessness throughout.'
