Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. As stretcher bearer he worked continuously, amidst the heaviest fighting and through a terrific barrage, to get his man. He went out close to an enemy trench and brought back men who had lain wounded for six days in a position from which it seemed impossible to rescue them.'
