War service: Egypt, Western Front Taken on strength, 24th Bn, Tel el Kebir, 10 January 1916. Transferred to and taken on strength of 60th Bn, Ferry Post, 4 April 1916. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 18 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 29 June 1916. Killed in action, 19 July 1916. Statement, Red Cross File No 2520506, 2878 Corporal R.E. POULTER, B Company, 60th Bn, 31 January 1917: 'I knew Slattery well ... He was killed by a shell in a bay in our lines with a man named Shaw. His body lies in the Fromelles Cemetery in a separate grave with a wooden cross over it.' Second statement, 3229 Pte N. JUDD, B Company, 60th Bn, 28 February 1917: 'I saw him killed at Fleurbaix in the front line trench before the charge of 19th. July. He had the back of his head blown off by a piece of shell.
