Distinguished Conduct Medal

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty as a stretcher bearer. When a party of nine men were caught in the barrage, three being killed and six wounded, he tried to get them with his squad of bearers, but his squad were all knocked out. He then went forward into the barrage alone, dressed the wounded, and carried them one by one to a place of safety. He then returned and organized a squad of bearers, and got them back to the A.P.'
