Military Cross 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He led a raiding party against a hostile strong point, the enemy trench being crossed and two prisoners captured. On a later occasion he volunteered to take part in a more extensive raid over the same areas, and rendered valuable service. Thanks to his resource and ability both enterprises proved markedly successful, prisoners being secured and much damage inflicted on the enemy.'

After his senior officers had early become casualties, he led the company brilliantly through very heavy machine gun fire, silencing one machine gun post after another, and killing of capturing the crew and a large number of prisoners. On reaching the eastern end of Peronne he found his flank dangerously exposed, and at once formed a defensive flank. By his courage and able handling of a difficult situation he contributed largely to the success of this battalion.'
