'Early on morning of 4th December, 1916, near FLERS, this man, accompanied by Private F. WALKER, was carrying despatches from the firing line to Battalion Headquarters, under heavy shell fire; Private WALKER was wounded and he dressed him in the open, assisted him to shelter, then taking WALKER's despatches with his own he delivered them to Battalion Headquarters, then returned through shell fire to his Company. He showed consistent coolness and bravery at all times under fire.'
