'North west of POZIERES. These men, in conjunction with 2nd Corporal KERR, were the linesmen responsible for the maintenance of the telephone lines of the 4th Australian Infantry Brigade, and accompanied him every time a breakdown occurred, during the nights of 8th/9th and 9th/10th August, 1916. During the day of the 10th August, 1916, Sapper SMALL was evacuated suffering from injuries received during the previous night, but Sapper SMITH carried on with his work throughout the night of 10th/11th August, 1916, thus enabling communication to be established at a most critical time.'
